Berkeley YACC
by Ghost on 11/16/2004

About: Parser generator

This IPK provides byacc, which is needed to build some applications.

From the byacc description: byacc is "Berkeley YACC", written by the same person who originally did
"bison". byacc is smaller, simpler, and faster than bison; it also
generates smaller and faster parsers than bison. It is the standard
"yacc" distributed with BSD/386 and other Net-2 descendents as well as
4.4BSD. Needless to say, it contains no AT&T/USL code. It is completely
compatible with AT&T Yacc's documentation, though it does not neccessarily
implement any UNdocumented features of AT&T Yacc.

CVS -- Concurrent Versions System
by Ghost on 11/16/2004

About: Version Control System

CVS is a version control system, which allows you to keep old versions of files (usually source code), keep a log of who, when, and why changes occurred, etc., like RCS or SCCS. Unlike the simpler systems, CVS does not just oper- ate on one file at a time or one directory at a time, but operates on hierarchical collections of directories con- sisting of version controlled files. CVS helps to manage releases and to control the concurrent editing of source files among multiple authors. CVS allows triggers to enable/log/control various operations and works well over a wide area network.

cvs keeps a single copy of the master sources. This copy is called the source ``repository''; it contains all the information to permit extracting previous software releases at any time based on either a symbolic revision tag, or a date in the past.

diffutils package: diff, diff3, cmp, sdiff
by Jeffrey Fox on 11/16/2004

About: diffutils finds the differences between files with similar contents

The diffutils are console utilities used to find the differences between files. For example, if you have been working on a document on both your PDA and your desktop PC, diff can find the differences between copies, and sdiff can help you merge changes into the original. The diffutils are a necessary component of RCS (the Revision Control System), the patch program, and many other program management systems. This package provides the Zaurus compatible binaries and man page style documentation in HTML format. The readme.html file describes how the binaries were built. They can be installed by unpacking via "tar zxvf diffutils-2.8.4.tgz" and putting diff, diff3 smp, and sdiff in a directory in your PATH. Read the HTML docs with your browser. NOTE: 9/29/03 Fixed diff3 -- new package contains fix -- tar gz file name unchanged.

distcc
by Ghost on 11/16/2004

About: Distributed compilation client for gcc

Cross-compiling for the Z is a hassle as scripts like those generated by autoconf will find all the stuff on your build box rather than what's on the Z. Compiling on the Z itself is very slow.

distcc allows you to do everything but the actual compilation on the Z, with the preprocessed sources being sent to another host you specify.
